Da haben die Schumacher-Brüder bei uns Fußball gespielt. Ich war tatsächlich da als noch keiner da war, weil ich die Netze aufgehangen hab. Die Reporter die da auch mitgespielt haben, waren nämlich bei meiner Großmutter in Pension und daher wusste ich, dass da evtl. ein paar special guests kommen. Ich hätte halt wirklich ohne Probleme ein Autogramm haben können weil als der Michael ankam noch keiner da war sonst. Später war es halt unmöglich weil zu viel los war.

Carrying the zero changes nothing in the math, so the “adding up” wasn’t what went wrong; it was the other person’s unwillingness to accept a situation. This is supported throughout the song as Doug Martsch describes a person who can’t accept their flaws and judges others without looking at their own shortcomings (“count your blemishes; you can’t, they’re all gone”/“Occupied with what other persons are”). Additionally, this person used to understand that self-absorption is foolish (And you’ve become what you thought was dumb//a fraction of the sum…the middle and the front"). In other words, nobody is that important; everyone is a tiny bit of everything. But now this person thinks so much of themself. They’re the middle and the front, like on a stage. Furthermore, Doug’s attempts to help the person see the bigger picture was futile because of the stubbornness and the ego’s fragility, incapable of real introspection.
