The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first gene therapy for inherited hearing loss, a one-time treatment that proved to be life-changing for a small number of children in a clinical trial who were born without hearing.

The condition it treats is rare, affecting up to about 50 babies born each year in the US with mutations in a gene known as OTOF. But the therapy’s effect can be profound: In a trial of 20 kids, 16 had improvements in hearing about five months after treatment. Five of 12 who were followed for at least 11 months had their hearing essentially restored to normal.

Das ist mit das wholesomste das ich seit langem gelesen habe:

Okay, so I am a recovering self harmer and as a teen I knew a lot of them.

One of them, who struggled with an eating disorder AND terrible depression, “adopted” a leech. And by that, I mean she went fishing with her grandpa, got a leech on her leg, and as depressed teens sometimes do, she ended up bonding with it and brought it home in a Gatorade bottle.

Thing is, it actually made her stop cutting. Because she didn’t wanna get an infection and pass it on to Phillip the Leech. And she started eating. Because if she wasn’t healthy, Phil wouldn’t get “good” blood.

Her parents decided to lean into this. They told her if she took her meds every single day for two months, they would buy her a fish tank for Philip, who had been living in a two gallon betta tank. She did it. They offered to get her a second leech to keep him company if she gained ten pounds (which would bring her to a healthy body weight). She did it.

We reconnected at this group thing where the girls who were in the hospital together could like, update each other? (It was actually really weird and kinda awkward. What do you say to people who saw you having a full nervous breakdown and screaming you wanted to die? And over pink cookies and koolaid, which felt very odd as snack choices but maybe was normal?) And I stg she looked like a completely different girl.

When we were hospitalized, she was SO THIN you could see her ribs and spine through her shirt, her hair was falling out, and if you’d asked me then where she would be in six months, I would have said she’d be dead. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want her to be! She was/is such a sweet, kind person and always had nice things to say to everyone during group therapy, even the girls who were kinda bitchy. (Can’t judge them for that tbh, no one wants to be there.) But she looked so frail, her eyes were surrounded in dark circles and her lips were white.

And then at the six month event, I didn’t even recognize her until she talked. Her hair was coming back and she had it in a pixie cut (it had been really long but as I said, it was falling out) she had color to her face and smiled and man it made me cry then and it’s kinda choking me up now remembering it. She just looked so happy. REALLY happy, not just putting up a front too. I was a little jealous of if I am totally honest.

We exchanged emails and have been more or less in contact since then. She told me about Philip and about Desiree (who her dad got from a science education catalog, I did not know those sold leeches but apparently so) and how she was getting into actual fish and we talked about my fish tank and stuff.

I’m not saying a leech saved her life… but honestly it kinda did?

Anyway, that’s my leech story. She doesn’t have leeches anymore but she does have a really beautiful knife fish she sent me a pic of a few months ago.
