The flashbacks make it very clear that Joel’s cold heart has melted a bit. He’s nicer and more open than he used to be. There’s also evidence in the game through some written logs that Jackson (the town where they live) regularly helps people stranded out in the sticks, which the people claim to be. When the thing goes down, Joel is also very outnumbered and taken by surprise.“
